(upbeat rock music) - good morning, passport holders. today is august 13th, 2015, day 286 of the vlogs and i just finished up doing the edit
wildfox dance all night sleep all day, on the salt river tubing bitwith chris and that crew. and, my goodness, it came out great. i mean, audio issues here and there, but that's to be expectedwhen i'm using a camera
that is waterproof and is being submerged multiple times throughout the day. that said, it did capturethe fun and the excitement and just, you know, generallyhanging out with one another. it was a great time and i'm really happy that i rearranged the schedule so that i could be here for it. that said, i've got a tonof work, a ton of work that i need to do in gettingfinal pack-up all done.
ben had actually forgottenthat i'm leaving today. so, trying to make sure thati get all that stuff handled before he heads off to work. - and i'm gone, i don'tget to hang out with you. i mean, thank you for everything over the last couple of weeks, man. i really appreciate it. - my pleasure, man, always. - [kade] this room, whichhas basically been home
for two weeks now, just shy of, is now empty and it's starting to hit me. it hit me when ben went towork and i got super emotional. but once again, i'm off. my life is back in my boxand the boxes in my car and the boxes in the storage unit. it's just, it's tough. it's tough sometimes to leavefriends like ben and kami. good people.
- back here at the storage unit, just to drop some of this stuff off. it's all been sitting inthe car and not being used, so might as well leave it here where i know it'sinsured and, secondarily, it's gonna be cool instead of all over the place in temperature. because i am expecting that texas and georgia are gonna bevery, very, very, very warm.
- well, passport holders, weare on the way now to el paso, 432 miles, plus the eightthat i've already done today. should give me a 440,all things said and done. i'm gonna turn right here ontothe i-10 and get us started. (turn signal clicks) i'm 10 miles down i-10 and inoticed that i forgot something in the storage unit that i was supposed to grab in order to help me. and so, as a result, i'mgonna just turn around
and go back here in a just a minute. it should be easy enough to do. kinda sucks that i have to,but at the end of the day, this is a big piece for mewhile i'm here in the car and with how much drivingi'm gonna be doing over the next six weeks, i wanna make sure that i get the opportunityto go back and grab it. so, at this point, i just have grabbed the lumbar support cushionfor my office chair
that i have had, i used wheni was sitting in my desk or sitting next to my treadmill desk and just never thought touse it here in the car. per my chiropractor andfriend brad's recommendation, i've been using a papertowel roll occasionally, in order to create some separation and allow my shoulders to go backward. and it never occurred to either of us for me to just use the same support
that i had on my officechair in here in the car. so, i'm really happy thati was able to grab it and it only cost me, idon't know, 25 minutes? so, worth doing, but nowit's time to get this done. i've got six hours ofdriving, approximately, between here and el paso and let's hope that it goes very, very smoothly. - [kade] i wish i could showyou guys the level of detail on these mountains, it's so gorgeous.
i mean, they're just so, so pretty, and then you have, over here on the right, that amazing mountain. you know, i'm so fortunate to be ableto drive through places that have these kinds ofgeographical features. in this drive, though, from phoenix to tucson, i've only been able to thinkabout one real core thing. and that is, well, two bits-- (car muffler rumbles)
thanks, guy with themuffler. totally useful. the first is that, when icomplete this road trip, i will be within about six days of when i said i was going to take a chance and reevaluate it, reevaluate being homeless, if it was providing adifferent and better lifestyle. and especially over the last week and the conversationsthat i have had with ben,
it's very clear to me that i need a little time in a place, especially with the start-upof the new business, not constantly having to battle the battle of finding good internet, finding a place to sleep every night. if i can avoid that, itwill give me more time to work on the business, and the business has to come first.
either it's gonna fly or it's not and we're gonna know alot in the next six weeks, between now and wheni get back to phoenix. as a result of all of that, i really do feel like getting an apartment,at least a crash-pad, a studio apartment, no frills, no nothing. getting a crash-pad for sixmonths is the right play. the second bit is onethat ben came to me with
after getting back from maine and apparently ben and kamihave had a number of discussions about this and i had neverheard anything about it. and that is that there is areal possibility in their minds, nothing's done yet, but a realpossibility in their minds that, once ben gets his degree and ben and kami have a kid or two, that they would want to move out to maine in order to be with kind ofour core group of friends
who have all gone back there. so, a lot of the arizona family,my chosen arizona family, was a group of guys who allwent to college together at the university of maine, who either brought their girlfriends out with them to arizona ormet their wives in arizona. since then, they've allkinda gone back to maine, minus trevor and tara, whoare now living in wisconsin, who we will see again on this road trip.
so, they're all back thereand the quality of life, the schools, all of thatis a major deciding factor and when ben told methat that was something they were still seriously considering, you know, obviously years down the line, but it is something they are considering, my immediate response was, "i'm coming if i don't haveanything here in phoenix." and it was the first time where
i am choosing people over place. and i know that it'snot a real choice yet, but if my gut reaction,my immediate reaction, was that clear, then it's clear as day that that's what i have to do. so, it's definitely alot for me to think about and as i go up to maine herein less than two weeks time, two-and-a-half weeks time, i'm gonna get an opportunity
to see what it might belike to live up there. i'm really, yeah, i'm interested in seeing how it will all play out. but, this clip is way too long and i should probably focus on driving. (rock music plays) - well, passport holders, it is time. after 17 days, i believe is what it was, all things said and done, it is time
to enter into another state. and this state, it's going to be one that we've been to a number of times and this will be the second-to-lasttime on the road trip, if all goes to plan, that i will be here. and i have to say itagain, passport holders, welcome to new mexico. - well, i just passedthrough deming, new mexico, which long-time passport holders will know
was the actual first citythat i shot a vlog episode in that wasn't phoenix. pretty amazing to think thatwe're 270-some days from when that happened. pretty amazing to me. i'm looking at the fuel situation and i'm looking at the mileage and it's still relatively possible, if i were to use the two reserve gallons,
that i could make itall the way to el paso. i'm gonna make it easy on myself, though. las cruces is only about 60 miles out. i've got about 85, 90 miles worth of range that is reported on thecomputer here in the car. so, i'm just gonna stop there, fuel up, burn the additionalgallon that i'm going to and then head on in to el paso tonight and not have to fuel up tomorrow.
- [kade] the mountains arelooking absolutely gorgeous here in las cruces. at golden hour, they'veactually gone purple. pretty amazing. the clouds are actuallya nice little pink too. - stop complete and i hit the quarter. - well this has been amuch less eventful drive across the state of new mexico. i'm very fortunate in thefact that i've been able
to do this multiple times and i really do lovelong-haul drives like this. it's a great, great feeling. and i am now leaving new mexico and welcome back, passport holders, to the great state of texas. let's see if that'll focus for me. just a little bit there, there we go. there are the final statsof the day, 477 miles,
all things said and done, seven hours, 11 minutes and an average mpg of 25.2 miles a gallon. let's go check into the hotel. - just checked into the hotel room, everything went fine on the check-in. get in here and notice that one of the things that i justkinda take for granted as i travel isn't in this room. and that's a full-size,
or at least a shelf-size, refrigerator. that just isn't here. super bummed about that becausei was hoping to do soylent. but now that i can't, guess what? i'm doing traditional foods tomorrow. hopefully i'll be able tosneak in a cheat meal then and, yeah, i gotta makesure that the hotel in san antonio has a refrigerator. 'cause if it doesn't, i need to cancel
that reservation immediately. so, looking to make that happen right now. but i've still gotta goget a few more things out of the car. (sighs) what a bummer, what a bummer. all right guys, i've been working here for a couple of hours. it's time for me to end it, though, because it's just aftermidnight here locally
and i've lost an hour today and i'm gonna lose an hour tomorrow. so i gotta get this all handled and make sure i get enough sleep. so, thank you guys foryour time and attention.
i sincerely appreciate them both. and remember, you neverstumble upon opportunity by standing still, so go do cool stuff. bye for now.
